It matters because the repair is not the same job. Hard coat cement stucco is a cement layer over metal lath. A synthetic system is foam-backed and handles water in a different way, which is why it needs EIFS installation and remediation rather than a cement patch. The late 1980s through early 2000s slice of that overlaps almost exactly with the period when synthetic stucco was used heavily on New Jersey homes. If your house went up in that window, it’s worth knowing what’s on the wall.
Older split-levels bring a different issue. Many have stucco or masonry on the front elevation only, which puts a cladding seam at every corner. That seam is where water gets in, and it’s the first place we look.
