The mortar between bricks wears out faster than the brick itself. When it cracks, gets soft, or falls out, water gets in behind the wall. Repointing means grinding out the old mortar and packing in fresh mortar. Done early, it’s a simple fix that stops bigger damage.
Spalling is when the face of a brick flakes, pops, or crumbles off. It usually means water got trapped inside the brick and froze. A few spalled bricks can be swapped out. Widespread spalling points to a moisture problem that needs to be solved first, sometimes with waterproofing services.
Front steps and stoops take constant foot traffic and weather. Cracks, loose treads, and wobbly railings are common. Small cracks can be patched. Bigger movement usually means the base shifted and the steps need to be rebuilt.
Chimneys are exposed on all sides, so they wear fast. Look for cracked mortar joints, loose bricks, or a damaged crown at the top. Catching chimney issues early keeps water out of the flue and the wall below it.
When water builds up behind a retaining wall without proper drainage, the pressure pushes the wall forward. That leads to bulging, leaning, and cracks. Many older walls in the area were built without good drainage and need retaining wall remediation. We assess the cause before any rebuild.
