Westfield requires a Certificate of Appropriateness before exterior work on locally designated properties. The town’s Historic Preservation Commission has handled that review since December 1984 and meets on the fourth Monday of the month at 425 E Broad Street.
Here’s the part people miss. The town states that designated sites and districts make up only a small portion of Westfield’s historic buildings. Plenty of homes in neighborhoods described as historic in a listing are not designated at all and need no historic review. Call Planning and Zoning and ask about your specific address. Don’t assume either way, and don’t let a contractor tell you it doesn’t matter.
